What’s the difference between cornice and coving? While both coving and cornice are used to create an elegant transition between wall and ceiling, there are distinct differences between the two. Coving tends to have a simpler, uniform C-shaped curve and is often made from lightweight materials such as polyurethane or polystyrene. It’s typically used in more modern or minimal interiors where subtlety is key. Cornice, on the other hand, is more decorative and detailed. It often features intricate patterns, stepped profiles, and classical motifs, adding a sense of grandeur and architectural character to a room. Cornicing is traditionally crafted from fibrous plaster, offering a superior finish and greater design depth.
-
What types of mouldings do you offer? We create cornice, coving, ceiling roses, dado rails, panelling, ceiling trays, arches, niches, skirting, architrave, columns, and more — all handcrafted in fibrous plaster. We also offer modern styles and heritage reproductions.
-
Do you offer bespoke mouldings? We don’t offer custom moulding as a standard service — but if you’re working on a larger project or need a quantity of matching pieces, we’re happy to discuss it, depending on the scope and feasibility.
-
What is fibrous plaster?Fibrous plaster is a strong, lightweight material made from Plaster of Paris reinforced with hessian or fibreglass. It’s perfect for creating detailed decorative mouldings.
-
What materials do you work with besides plaster? We also work with Jesmonite, Portland Stone, Bathstone, Yellow Sandstone, Old Terracotta, and Silver Grey Granite — ideal for external or specialist finishes.
-
Are your mouldings suitable for listed buildings?Yes. Our profiles are regularly used in conservation projects and listed property refurbishments. We can match historical detail exactly or supply period-appropriate alternatives.
